Responsible for providing executive leadership for the local economic development organization (LEDO) in collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville team and economic development partners in the region to establish: strategic, long-term goals, objectives and policies. The President leads a multi-disciplinary team to succeed in the goal of assisting new and existing businesses in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. The President is also responsible for the strategy and management of Innovation Pointe, a high-tech business incubator assisting in the creation and growth of startup businesses. Innovation Pointe uniquely offers coworking space and serves as a center for collaborative economic development entities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides leadership throughout the organization and establishes credibility with external partners and the Board of Directors to ensure the mission and key objectives are accomplished; effective solutions are developed; and a professional environment and culture is maintained.
The candidate is required to exercise sound judgement and demonstrate proficiency in managing and engaging in activities relating to business location, retention, and expansion decisions. The candidate will act as a Project Manager for business and economic development initiatives. He/she must be able to earn the confidence and respect of local businesses and collaborative resource partners.
Respond to requests from potential new businesses and local firms with retention and expansion needs. Serve as a primary contact for businesses, including entrepreneurial activities and businesses operating within Vanderburgh County.
Maintain comprehensive knowledge of local and State technical and financial assistance programs available to businesses. Facilitate assistance to individual businesses.
Acquire and maintain familiarity with major employers, businesses, industry clusters, county assets, important initiatives and other matters potentially affecting location decisions as needed to effectively market the County to outside investment and/or promote the retention and expansion of county businesses.
Spearhead the development, communication, and implementation of effective economic development growth strategies and processes for greater Evansville.
Collaborate to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, policies, and personnel that promotes organizational growth and sustainability.
Strengthen the intermediary partnership agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) and explores opportunities related to DoD technologies and federal research.
Develop partnerships with higher education institutions that foster and advance innovation and entrepreneurship in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Further develop the partnership with University of Southern Indiana (USI) to fully utilize the resources available in support of the goals of the Growth Alliance/Innovation Pointe. Maintains State Technology Park Certification for Innovation Pointe.
Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting: including appropriate controls over systems and budgeting procedures following GAAP and financial best practices.
Professionally communicates and markets the Growth Alliance’s mission to the community, local businesses, financial sponsors, trade/industry groups, and stakeholders.
Coordinates services between the Growth Alliance and its public/private allies at the State, regional and local levels and maintains the primary leadership responsibility for economic development initiatives for the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County.
Meet with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, delivering monthly and quarterly financial, operating and project reports. Present stakeholder reports to requested and required groups.
Manages 5 employees; responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Growth Alliance team. Responsibilities include; interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Providing mentorship and career development opportunities.
Candidate possesses skills and competencies in leadership, communication, visioning, managing, delegating, coaching, and networking.
Experience in facilitating business location decisions is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will have proven success in collaborating with others and specific experience and demonstrable skills with formal economic development programs.
The candidate is a visionary with an entrepreneurial spirit preferably with personal experience in starting and running a business.
Proficiency in understanding financial statements and proven business management skills including marketing, public relations and sales are desirable.
Ability to work collaboratively with community leaders from business, government, and education as well as economic and workforce development stakeholders is critical.
Strong communication skills and demonstrated leadership skills in work team development required.
Seven years’ experience in economic development at a local or regional level required as well as Bachelor’s Degree in related field with master’s degree preferred.
Completed courses and/or certifications (CEcD) in economic development highly preferred.
